Create + Connect Self-Portraits
K - 12th grade+ / 3 hours (can be split into 3 days)
Ginger works with students to create original works of art in the form of Self Portraits. She references the works of Romare Bearden who used collage to depict many chapters of his life and can weave this proces into many curriculum subjects and themes.
Students dig deep into their essence, their lived experience, their stories and circumstances to create a thought provoking work of art using found imagery, collage and lush explosions of color.
These Self Portraits have a profound effect not just on the creators of the works but also on those that view the images. They transcend barriers and boundaries in order to express and celebrate our shared humanity. Teachers/Leaders are encouraged to participate on their own work alongside the students.

Notebooks and supplies are provided for each participant to continue the practice throughout the year.

Create + Connect Community Murals
1st - 12th grade+
Ginger can work with students to create larger scale collaborative community portraits that can become wall murals.
In this example above, she worked with four classes of second graders to explore community and connection through collage - using Romare Bearden’s work as inspiration as well as her own.
Students created their own collage about something in their own life and community, then had to weave that into a larger collage with 3 other students. We then scanned and enlarged these larger collages and collaged them together to cover the wall of this school’s library.
